35 Years of Excellence
Since 1989, the Winona State University Men's Rugby Club has established itself as a formidable presence in collegiate rugby, building a legacy of excellence, brotherhood, and competitive spirit.
For 35 years, our players have embodied the core values of rugby: integrity, passion, solidarity, discipline, and respect. From humble beginnings with just a handful of dedicated players to becoming regional champions, our journey has been marked by perseverance and an unwavering commitment to the sport.
The Doggs, as we're known on the pitch, have developed a reputation for hard-hitting, fast-paced rugby that has earned the respect of opponents throughout the Midwest and beyond. Our alumni network spans generations, creating a brotherhood that extends far beyond graduation.
A small group of students founded the Winona State Men's Rugby Club with a passion for the sport and a vision to build something lasting. The first practices were held on the small fields behind the dorms with borrowed equipment and makeshift goal posts.
The team captured its first Minnesota Collegiate Rugby Conference championship, marking the beginning of a competitive tradition. That year's squad became known for its gritty defense and never-say-die attitude, setting the standard for future teams.
The program expanded significantly, doubling in size and establishing a dedicated training regimen. The team secured permanent practice fields and began building stronger relationships with the university and local community.
After dominating the regional competition, the team qualified for the National Small College Rugby Organization (NSCRO) tournament for the first time, placing in the top 8 nationally and putting Winona State rugby on the map.
The team enjoyed its most successful period to date, winning three consecutive conference championships and developing several players who would go on to play at the elite club level and receive national team consideration.
Celebrating three decades of excellence with an alumni weekend that brought back over 100 former players spanning every era of the program's history. The current squad defeated the alumni all-stars in a hard-fought match that showcased the program's continuing strength.
Now in our 35th year, Winona State Men's Rugby continues to build on our rich tradition while embracing modern approaches to training, recruitment, and competition. With a strong current roster and growing alumni support, the future looks brighter than ever for the Doggs.
